Part 2: Quick Technical Check Before Riding
With this series of content in the Cycling Academy with Matej Mohorič, we promote a culture of respect for the road, the rules, and for one another. Respectful. Sporty. Safe.
In the second part, we focus on the importance of having a technically sound bicycle — something we are each responsible for. For a smoother and safer cycling season, we recommend a full professional inspection and service before the season begins and before any major or demanding cycling challenges you plan to undertake. We also advise simple at home checks before every ride, which anyone can carry out. We encourage you to make this a routine — just like keeping your bidon filled. To support this routine, we use the simple logic air–brakes–chain, combined with a systematic check from the front to the rear wheel.
Tyres and Pressure
Tyre pressure is the foundation of safe and efficient riding. Higher pressure generally means lower rolling resistance and fewer punctures, while pressure that is too low leads to rapid wear and cracked sidewalls. The simplest approach is to follow the pressure range indicated on the tyre and adjust it according to the rider’s weight, tyre width, and riding surface. Pressure should be checked before every ride and always with a gauge, as the “thumb test” is not reliable. With tubeless systems, you can ride at slightly lower pressure (within the allowed range), which provides more grip and comfort.
When checking the tyres, look for cuts, bulges, and porous surfaces. Spin the wheel briefly and do a quick visual check. We recommend this check weekly.
Brakes
Brake levers must engage firmly and evenly. For cable actuated brakes, check the condition of the cables: frayed strands or sticky housings, especially after riding in rain. With hydraulic brakes, pay attention to leaks and a “soft” or “empty” feel, which may indicate air in the system and the need for bleeding. Before riding, perform a short test: at moderate speed, make sure the bike stops predictably and without grabbing or pulsating.
Regularly monitor brake pad wear and keep both the rotors and pads clean, as dirt significantly increases stopping distance and can cause unpleasant noises during braking.
Drivetrain and Gearing
Mechanical shifting should be crisp and free of skipping; cables and housings must be undamaged. Shift through the entire gear range (rear and front, if applicable). If the chain skips under load on certain cogs, it’s time for an adjustment or service.
For electronic shifting (e.g., Di2, AXS, EPS), the same rules apply regarding clean chains and proper alignment, but additionally you must regularly check battery status, clean contacts, and occasionally update the firmware according to the manufacturer’s instructions. With Di2, use dedicated charging cables, keep contacts dry, and charge the system indoors in a dry, ventilated space.
Before a longer ride, test the entire gear range and listen for “rumbling” or skipping under load — if present, check derailleur hanger alignment and the condition of cogs and chain.
Helmet
After any strong impact, replace the helmet immediately — even if there are no visible signs of damage. Replacement intervals vary by manufacturer (approx. 3–5 years of regular use or 5–10 years total), so the actual condition is decisive: cracks, material fatigue, worn adjustment systems. If in doubt, it’s time for a new one.
Pedals and Cycling Shoes
Perform a quick engagement and release test while standing next to a wall or with one foot on the ground. Set the spring tension so the shoes release easily but not unintentionally during riding. Regularly check for cleat wear and ensure all bolts are tightened.
Handlebar and Grip
Grip must be secure. If the bar tape slips, is worn smooth, or is deteriorating, replace it. Fresh, properly wrapped bar tape significantly improves control and comfort — especially in hot weather and when sweating. And of course, we recommend choosing tape that matches your bike’s color.
Bearings: Headset, Hubs, Bottom Bracket
Perform a short test:
- Press the front brake and place your hand on the junction of the frame and headset to feel for play.
- Lift the bike and gently move the wheel left–right.
- If you detect play or rough rotation, service is needed.
For bottom bracket bearings, we recommend regular checks and replacement when needed to ensure optimal power transfer.
Chain and Drivetrain
A clean, moderately lubricated chain extends the life of your cassettes and chainrings and ensures quieter, faster shifting. Include it in your basic sequence air–brakes–chain before every ride. Use a chain wear gauge to regularly check stretch, avoiding shifting problems and preventing a worn chain from damaging the cogs.
There are several lubrication methods: drip lube, spray, dry and wet lubes, and hot wax immersion. Lubes come in oil , wax , or Teflon based formulas; the latter require slightly more careful application.
Choose the system that suits you best. Our tip: keep a wet weather lube for rainy days.
When to Take Your Bike for Service
Regularly and preventively, but definitely when:
- You notice recurring play in hubs or the headset.
- The brakes feel soft or hydraulic fluid is leaking.
- Gears skip under load.
- Tyres show bulges or cracks.
It’s wise to have a professional inspect the bike at the start of the season and before major cycling events or adventures. We also recommend a check later in the season if you train consistently or use a trainer setup.
Quick At Home Checklist (5–8 minutes)
- Tyres & Pressure – check with a gauge; inspect for cuts, bulges, porous areas; adjust pressure to weight, width, and terrain; stay within limits for tubeless.
- Brakes – no rubbing; check frayed cables or hydraulic leaks; test braking before riding.
- Gears – shifting must be smooth; for electronic systems check battery, clean contacts, update firmware.
- Chain & Drivetrain – clean and properly lubricated; check wear.
- Handlebar & Tape – grip must be secure; replace worn tape.
- Bearings – any play or roughness means service.
- Pedals & Cleats – beginners should practice clipping in/out; adjust tension; tighten bolts; check pedal bearings before the season.
- Helmet – no cracks; replace after impacts; follow age recommendations and inspect actual condition.
Recommended Items for Every Ride
A spare tube or patch kit, two tyre levers, a pump or CO₂ cartridge, a multitool.
For longer rides, add a quick link, a tissue or gloves for repairs, some cash, and a phone with ID for emergencies.
Note on electronic shifting:
Electronic shifting is very precise but needs special attention: charge the battery with proper cables and according to manufacturer instructions, keep contacts dry and clean, follow LED error codes when troubleshooting, and update firmware periodically. For Di2, this is done via official tools and appropriate cables. Avoid unsuitable chargers and always charge in a dry area.
E Bike Servicing
In addition to all the above steps, e bikes require care for the battery (charging and storage per manufacturer guidelines), cables and connectors (clean, dry, intact), sensors and chainrings (free of dirt), and the control unit (check for updates).
If you notice unusual noises, assistance interruptions, or display errors, visit an authorised service centre with diagnostic tools — quick action means lower costs and greater safety.
